FORBEARING HOWLITE

Howlite is a borate mineral that exhibits a refined marbled effect. It is opaque, except in tiny grains. Its veins create a sense of depth that intrigues yet soothes the senses.

 

 

 

DID YOU KNOW?

THE NAME

The Canadian chemist, geologist, and mineralist Henry How discovered this gemstone near Windsor (Canada) in 1868. Miners, who found it to be a nuisance, pointed it out to him in a gypsum quarry. He would call it silico-boro-calcite. The American geologist James Dwight Dana named it howlite shortly after.

It is said that howlite would be called the “buffalo sacred stone” or “white buffalo stone”, as it was as rare as the white buffalo.
